I know you’re probably sick of seeing nail swatches, and to be honest, I’m getting bored of them, too. I promise I’ll post something different next.
Anyway, a couple of days ago, after I finished my shift, I wandered over to the Impulse beauty department at Macy’s and decided to swatch the Autumn/Winter 2012 collection. Just because. Well, mostly for the blog.
From pinky to thumb: Lovely Jubbly, Dodgy Barnett, Trustafarian, Gobsmacked, Shag. Indoor lighting. I took this in the break room, on my lunch break. :P
I actually already bought Dodgy Barnett a couple weeks ago after seeing swatches on workplaypolish. I’ve never had a holographic polish before and her swatches were so gorgeous, I had to have it. I even got my coworker to buy one too, haha! It reminds me of a Christmas wrapping paper we used to have that I was mesmerized by when I was a kid.
Outdoors, in the shade.
Official descriptions (pulled off macys.com) and my thoughts on the rest of the collection:
Lovely Jubbly: “A vibrant magenta flecked with red, blue and gold micro-particles. This sultry glitter channels a distinctly retro, 70′s feel. High impact sparkle for disco divas. Means “excellent”. Used when a person hears pleasing news, or has a stroke of good luck.” I’m not feeling Lovely Jubbly at all. I don’t like the combination of the colors. It feels very juvenile/Claire’s to me.
Dodgy Barnett: “A highly holographic lacquer in a classic shade that blurs the line between grey and silver. A bad hairdo. Mullet of any variety = seriously Dodgy Barnett.” Haha, the description makes me laugh. Why would you name such a pretty color after a bad hairdo? :P Anyway, I obviously like this one since I bought it already.
Trustafarian: “A golden holographic finish gives this delightful sage green a surprising and sophisticated edge. A spoiled rich kid who pretends to be a hippy, but still goes home to Daddy’s mansion on the weekend.” The holographic on this is pretty, but I don’t think the color itself suits my skin tone. I do like the name, though.
Gobsmacked: “A heavily pigmented charcoal grey glitter with a slightly textured finish. This shade is unlike anything we’ve seen before – a legend in the making! Being totally speechless. Unable to think of anything to say.” Okay, while the rest of the collection was kinda meh to me, this one literally had me gobsmacked (sorry!). It looks unimpressive in the bottle, rather run of the mill black glitter. But, once swatched, I think it’s so unique with its glitter combined with the textured, matte finish. I must have this. The next employee appreciation we have, I’m going to buy it. I’m so bad, I know.
Shag: “A high-shine metallic lacquer in a warm orange-burgundy hue. Reminiscent of fallen autumn leaves. Sigh. Brit slang for knocking boots.” This is a nice color and it doesn’t look bad on me, but I don’t feel anything for it at all. It’s just not a color I’m personally drawn to/interested in.
Lastly, some pictures in direct sunlight. See how the holographic ones really shine? Gobsmacked admittedly looks a bit gross, but I think I went too thick on the application. I used 3 coats for Gobsmacked and 2 for everything else.
Also, I did not use a base or top coat with these swatches, and these pictures were taken one day after I had swatched them. As you can tell, some of them already chipped. Honestly, I’ve yet to find a polish that won’t chip on me, even with a good base and top coat. I grab shoe boxes all day at work, so I really don’t expect anything to survive 9 hours of being hard on my hands. In fact, my thumb nail even broke a tiny bit.
Bleh.
Anywho, what are your thoughts? See anything you like?

It’s such a shame that Trustafarian is a bit sheer. It’s really the one that I was the most excited about!
True, I think it could benefit from one more coat (I used 2). But at least the formula is thin, so adding an extra coat won’t make it thick and goopy. :)
Based on the company’s swatches alone, I wasn’t excited by any of these, until I saw them on fingers… Specifically, my fingers. :P
