I already wrote about how I got into makeup in the first place. Today I’m going to talk about a different kind of evolution. More specifically, how my interests have changed.
My first cosmetics love was eyeshadow. From when I first discovered it, at age 12, to my reintroduction at age 20. However, like most newbies, I had no clue how to properly apply makeup. That sure didn’t stop me, though. I went out with friends once to a nightclub wearing bright blue, green and purple on my lids… and nothing else on my face. LITERALLY NOTHING ELSE. No liner, no mascara, no foundation, no lip gloss. Are you cringing? I sure am.
I don’t remember how long that lasted (or more likely, I don’t want to), but I eventually discovered that hey, liner really pulls things together. And then it was ZOMG, MASCARA YOU ARE THE LOVE OF MY LIFE. I was big on the eye makeup for the first year or so and kept everything else pretty basic. I bought lots of value kits of lip gloss because they were low maintenance to wear and inoffensive (I was, and still am, a bit color shy when it comes to my lips).
In 2009, before I went to Berlin, I realized that I didn’t really have any cheek colors, aside from the six in the giant Sephora blockbuster palette that I rarely used (oops). I wanted to take a few with me, so I bought the Too Faced the Bronzed and the Beautiful palette. From there, I started collecting more cheek colors, mostly blushes. I became a blush convert. I firmly believe that some color on your cheeks is the fastest way to perk up your your complexion. Inexplicably, I’ve also acquired a number of bronzers since the Too Faced palette, even though I still don’t really use bronzer. I should. I’m the palest I’ve ever been in my life. I live in Hawaii, and yet I have zero tan lines. :(
After cheeks, I got interested in lipsticks. I still like gloss, but in all honesty, these days I usually use a tinted lip balm. I’m slowly getting more confident and experimental when it comes to wearing a bold lip. In fact, right now I’m wearing a classic red lipstick! But I have no intentions of going anywhere, ha! Baby steps.
Lastly, I only just recently started filling in my eyebrows. I’m a hot mess, I know. I have pretty dark brows as it is, but filling them in (especially for pictures!) makes all the difference. My brows could use a good trim and a wax, though, and I’m still not entirely convinced that the brow powder I picked up is the right color for me. :S I’ll probably look back in five years and cringe again.
How have your interests in makeup changed over the years? Were/are you as hopeless as I? Please say yes, I could use the sympathy. :P
Haha, as you know, I think I’ve just gotten crazier over the years. I think maybe towards high school graduation it was neutrals, liner, and gloss. And then, once college happened, everything exploded in all directions. :P Although eyes are still my favorite.
I definitely went the other way. :P Eyes are still my favorite too, though.
